September often feels like the start of a new year. With summer holidays behind us, many of us embark on fresh adventures—whether at school, home, or work—regardless of age. Fall is a busy season, a time to renew and plan for the months ahead, whether that involves studies, education, travel, or personal projects. For many, September marks the beginning of new goals and intentions, much like a prelude to the New Year’s resolutions.
This fall, I am excited about the upcoming release of my new book, The Crow Jacket: Navigating the Challenges of Dementia. I am planning book signings and presentations to share stories and practical ways to support those journeying with dementia—whether clients or loved ones.
My hope is to offer encouragement and inspiration, helping others view dementia as a journey that, while challenging, can still hold moments of joy and reduced stress. Dementia is a disease no one asks for—it is given. Despite its difficulties, life retains its beauty even after a diagnosis. No matter what challenges arise, we must do our best to face them with strength and compassion.
I wish everyone reading this blog a successful and fulfilling start to the fall season. May you find clarity and motivation to pursue your plans and goals in the coming months.
Marian Heemskerk brings a deeply felt empathy to the subject of dementia and aging. Drawing on over four decades in elder care, she doesn’t just convey facts — she conveys humanity. Her blend of educational content and real-life stories makes the complex and emotionally heavy topic accessible, while honouring the dignity of people living with dementia — and the unsung work of caregivers. I’d strongly recommend this book, The Crow Jacket, to anyone navigating the journey of dementia care or trying to understand what a loved one is going through.~ Khysen Quintia (Assisted Living Care Manager)
